Farming in New Orleans

New Orleans has had a rich history of many cultures growing food in our city for profit. Local growers provide a source of produce and other products for farmers markets, truck vendors, restaurant chefs, and next-door neighbors all over the city.

The New Orleans Food & Farm Network wants to keep this heritage alive, provide more local connections to healthy food, and encourage people to farm again within the city.

New Orleans Food & Farm Network's program of assisting locals to grow food at home; The Farm Yard Project, got some attention recently from the Times Picayune. Many participants not only enjoy the organic gardening work, but are enjoying that special home-grown flavor that only garden grown vegetables can have, and a savings in their grocery bills as well!

Growing food at home is a good way to have access to fresh produce. Food & Farm's programs are currently in the Algiers and HollyGrove neighborhoods. Both neighborhoods have a lack of fresh produce in corner stores or have long distances to travel to supermarkets to get vegetables. Urban Farming with NOLA City Farms

Imagine our city with small urban farms tucked into every neighborhood- utilizing abandoned or underused green space. What if you only had to walk a block or two to talk with your local farmer and your kids could see where food comes from and what a “real” farmer looks like.
